Windows Process Viewer is a free program that will show you all the active Windows processes running on your computer, in an easier to understand format than the Windows Task Manager. It displays the Windows file name, full folder path and file size for each task. If you click a process, the file checker will connect to the File.net online database for additional process information, including the real name of the process and the name of the developer. You will also see the expected default folder path. So you learn more about Windows processes running on a computer or identify process in Task Manager. Verify your startup system processes located in System32 folder like svchost.exe (generic host process for win32 services), lsass.exe (Local Security Authority Service), alg.exe (Application Layer Gateway Service), ctfmon.exe, csrss.exe, wmiprvse.exe, wisptis.exe and wuauclt.exe.

Glint monitor shows system activity by using system performance counters in local or remote computer. Recent values can be also shown as graphs. It also displays the most active processes in system in descending CPU activity order. Counters names and last values are shown in tool tips. Settings dialogs allow to select counters and indicators colors along with other attributes. More than 200 indicators can be active at once. User can switch temporarily off costly or unnecessary counters or change the monitor view mode by simply pressing a key. Settings dialogs allow to select any counters available in system and set colors for their indication.

There are many reasons why you wouldn't want your operating system connect to Microsoft's server, be it for practical reasons or pure idealism. Based on the source-code of the award-winning xpy (version 0.9.8), Vispa allows you to easily tweak your Windows Vista for better privacy and security, even system performance. Do a few clicks rather than finding the write registry keys or program settings. The only recommendation I can give is not applying settings without vague knowledge of what you're doing. Not every setting is desired in every environment. Vispa is no tool for beginners, just a more convenient way of tweaking your operating system.

DShutdown (Dimio's Shutdown) is a stand-alone program that allows you to tidily shutdown local or remote PCs. DShutdown supports more than just standard shutdown options, there are options relating to "pure" shutdown (such as the "force after wait" option which causes a forced, but 'clear' shutdown). There are monitoring options that allow you to shutdown a PC after a particular application terminates, useful at the end of compressing several files. There are options to shutdown a PC when Internet traffic reduces below a particular data-rate, useful to shutdown a PC at the end of a download). It is also possible to intercept a shutdown request initiated by the user or an application, and to then execute the shutdown request with selected options from DShutdown. (For example: to shutdown all Lan PCs at server-shutdown). DShutdown doesn't force a power-off without logging off and saving settings, it provides a means to log-off, shutdown and power-off your PCs. Admins who use roaming profiles will appreciate the benefits of this.

RS232 Data Logger by Eltima Software is an Open Source application which allows you to redirect all communication data from RS232 compliant serial port device into a text file for further analysis. RS232 Data Logger redirects data from any available serial port (doesn't matter whether it is virtual or real one) and works under Virtual Machine (VMWare). You can gather data from multiple serial ports simultaneously. All data recorded as a text can be further analyzed. For instance, you may parse global positioning data (coordinates) from GPS device connected to your notebook via serial port to track your movement; or you may simply investigate and learn how serial ports work. RS232 Data Logger is able to select the file where to redirect incoming data for each port and specify serial port connection parameters (baudrate, parity, stop bits, flow control, databits). Among other hot features of this Data Logger is real-time counter of the received and stored bytes and the ability to work under Virtual Machines. The utility allows you to disable/enable logging on-the-fly and append incoming data to already existing file. RS232 Data Logger is provided with source code (MFC/C++ VC7.1).

StartupMonitor is a small utility that runs transparently (it doesn't even use a tray icon) and notifies you when any program registers itself to run at system startup. It prevents those utterly useless tray applications from registering themselves behind your back, and it acts as a security tool against trojans like BackOrifice or Netbus. StartupMonitor does not require Startup Control Panel, but it complements it nicely. When you choose not to allow a program to register itself, the program's entry becomes disabled in Startup Control Panel, so you can go back and enable it later if necessary. StartupMonitor watches the Start Menu's Startup folders and the Run entries in the registry.
